3Mâ„¢ Nextelâ„¢ 312 & 440
These continuous alumina-boria-silica ceramic fiber products deliver reliable strength, flexibility, and stability at temperatures up to 2192°F (1200°C) and 2372°F (1300°C) for the 312 and 440 series, respectively. As true ceramic materials, they offer oxidation resistance, low thermal conductivity, chemical inertness, and electrical insulation even in extreme environments.
Compared to other high-temperature textiles such as aramids, carbon, quartz, or glass, Nextel 312 and 440 maintain performance where others degrade, making them an exceptional substrate for high-duty thermal, mechanical, and flame-barrier applications.
Fabrics
Nextel 312 and 440 fabrics offer a wide range of engineered constructions that provide design flexibility for thermal protection systems. Available in multiple weaves, thicknesses, areal weights, and permeabilities—including thin, lightweight styles and thicker double-layer options—they can be tailored for specific performance needs. Their versatility makes them suitable as standalone barriers or as integral layers in composite thermal-protection assemblies.
Uses
Braided sleeving
Nextel 312 and 440 sleeving delivers scalable, form-fitting coverage for cables, hoses, and sensitive components. Their braided structure conforms easily to complex shapes and varying diameters while maintaining consistent protective coverage. This makes the sleeving particularly effective for routing, bundling, and shielding applications in aerospace, industrial, and electrical systems where a durable, flexible wrap is required.
Uses
Woven tapes
Nextel 312 and 440 tapes provide high-temperature reinforcement in a compact, easy-to-apply format. Their narrow woven form factor allows precise placement in confined spaces, tight bends, or wrap-around applications. These tapes are well-suited for localized insulation, edge reinforcement, and component wrapping where controlled application and minimal bulk are essential.
Uses
Sewing threads
Nextel 312 and 440 sewing threads bring ceramic-fiber performance to stitched assemblies, enabling the fabrication of thermal barriers that maintain integrity under demanding conditions. Their rayon wrap improves sewability and handling, allowing these threads to be used with specialized equipment to construct or repair high-temperature fabrics, insulation products, and refractory components. They ensure seams remain durable and structurally sound where traditional threads would fail.
Uses
Yarn, roving, and chopped fibers
Nextel 312 and 440 rovings, yarns, and chopped fibers provide versatile reinforcement options for high-temperature assemblies. Available in multiple forms for wrapping, weaving, winding, or composite fabrication, they integrate easily into structural and non-structural components. Compatible sizings improve handling and resin bonding, making these fibers reliable elements in advanced thermal and composite systems.
Uses
3Mâ„¢ Nextelâ„¢ 610 & 720
3Mâ„¢ Nextelâ„¢ 610 and 720 are continuous oxide structural fibers designed for load-bearing composites. Nextel 610 offers high room-temperature strength, while Nextel 720 provides superior creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Their stable alumina-based compositions allow reinforcement of ceramic, metal, and polymer matrices without degradation, making them reliable choices for aerospace and industrial applications where conventional fibers fail.
Structural Fabrics
Nextel 610 and 720 structural fabrics provide stable, precisely engineered textile architectures for composite reinforcement. Available in multiple weaves, thread counts, and thicknesses, they allow designers to tune stiffness, strength distribution, and permeability for specific structural requirements. Their controlled construction supports consistent layup, predictable handling, and reliable integration into ceramic, metal, or polymer matrix systems.
Roving and chopped fibers
Nextel 610 and 720 yarns, rovings, and chopped fibers offer adaptable reinforcement options for advanced composite manufacturing. Their continuous-filament forms support efficient weaving, winding, and layup processes, while chopped variants enable uniform dispersion in molded or cast composite systems. Controlled sizing formulations improve handling and resin compatibility, helping these fibers integrate cleanly into ceramic, metal, or polymer matrices. This flexibility makes them valuable for structural components requiring precise reinforcement placement or tailored composite architectures.
